Mental Health Writings: Parenting--the Minimum Necessary to Be a Parent

 All expressed in my short poem, "So Your Mate Is Pregnant."  All that is minimally required to be a parent, period.  Not necessarily a good parent.  Just a parent!--GF  

SO YOUR MATE

IS PREGNANT

And you’re both going

to become parents.

Congratulations!

You’ve proved,

both of you,

that you have the—

ability to fuck!

Because that’s all it takes

to become a parent.

But becoming a good parent,

or even a halfway decent

parent, that’s a whole

other matter.

Remember, every bad

parent, every lousy parent,

even every sexually, physically,

verbally and emotionally abusive

parent, became one precisely

the same way every good parent

did—by fucking!

Biology only cares

about reproducing the species;

it doesn’t care in the least

how many new fucked-up

individuals it brings into

the world.
